Duncan tine and disc drills will both deliver excellent germination results providing you select the right drill for the conditions. Both product ranges are designed for direct or zero-tillage planting, but they have different characteristics which are important to consider.

Duncan tine drills use slimline Baker boots mounted on 25mm solid spring steel vibrating coil tines which are excellent for penetrating hard or heavy ground and established pastures without blocking. Each boot cuts an inverted T seed slot filled with fine tilth and trapped vapour to promote rapid and reliable seed germination. Adding optional opening discs in front of the tines improves ground penetration and is ideal for high residue or cover crop environments.

Duncan disc drills perform better in stony conditions, stubble ground and matted conditions like Kikuyu. We offer double disc or triple disc drills which both create a precise V slot with minimal ground disturbance for a clean finish. Duncan double disc drills have a combination assembly of a scalloped disc and plain disc to provide a cutting action in cover crops and residue, preventing trash build up and hair-pinning of residue in the slot. The triple disc models have more contour following ability and an opening disc in front of the planting coulters for even better penetration and residue management.

LOWER PURCHASE AND LIFETIME COSTS

Tine drills generally cost less to buy than a disc drill and there are fewer moving and wearing parts, so maintenance over the life of the drill will be less. Typical wearing parts would be the replaceable Baker boots.

25mm SPRING COIL TINES

Made from solid spring steel, these are clamped onto the toolbar frame with no drilled holes to weaken them, so they are very durable meaning minimal breakages. The tines vibrate as they travel through the ground, but remain stiff with minimal sideways movement so they track straight for accurate row spacing and follow directly behind the opening discs. The coil design allows the tine to deflect backward when it hits an obstacle, without lifting out of the ground, maintaining consistent seeding depth.

HI-CHROME BAKER BOOTS

The Baker Boot design is slimline for a narrow entry with a tungsten carbide leading edge on the point to penetrate hard ground. The boots are cast from Hi-Chrome alloy which is a tough material designed for high impact and abrasion resistance to give you the best long-life performance. Lower wings and the heel of the boot create a cavity below the slot containing all of the key ingredients being seed, fertiliser, moisture, air and loose soil which is ideal for fast germination and rapid root development.

DUAL OUTLETS

Planting seed and fertiliser at the same time promotes more vigorous germination. Our design has an outlet tube mounted in front of the seed outlet so that fertiliser is planted lower then the seed.

STAGGERED TINES

The tines are staggered across 3 or 4 toolbars, with generous spacing between them, for optimum trash flow through standing stubble or residue.

 

VERSATILITY

Our double disc drills are designed to perform in most conditions including stony ground, cover crops and stubble where tine drills can pull up stones or block with residue. The design pairs dual discs to form a V-shaped opener, with a scalloped disc leading a plain disc by 30mm. This creates a scissor cutting action that prevents trash build-up and stops residue hair-pinning in the slot.

LOW MAINTENANCE CONTOURING SYSTEM

Each double disc coulter is mounted on a spring loaded jump assembly with a single pivot point. The pivot allows each coulter arm to follow the ground contour independently for a consistent seeding depth. Greaseable, replaceable brass bushes in the pivot points extend the machine’s service life.

ADJUSTABLE DOWNFORCE

A heavy-duty powder coated coil spring has an adjustable pre-loading tensioner to provide up to 165kg of downforce on each coulter assembly to break into hard ground.

LONG-LIFE DISCS

380mm diameter Duncan discs are built from hardened and tempered boron-manganese alloy steel. This carefully selected material delivers high wear resistance, excellent performance and extremely long working life in the field.

OPTIONAL PRESS WHEELS

Close the seed slots with rubber press wheels to create a sealed vapour-rich environment for excellent germination, gently rolling the seedbed for a consistent, even finish. Spring-loaded and mounted to the disc arm, they closely follow the discs and contour smoothly over stones and trash.

MAXIMUM YIELD

The narrow 125mm row spacing improves weed competition, speeds canopy closure, and spreads plant population more evenly — allowing wider spacing between seeds within the row for stronger individual plant development.

MODERATE COST OF OWNERSHIP

Costing less to buy than a triple disc drill and with fewer moving parts to maintain, double disc machines deliver the benefits of disc drilling at a reasonable lifetime cost of ownership.
